Unfortunately, there is a current problem with some of the items which have been updated to state they are in the Main Library, when in fact they are still in the JCM Library. We are not quite sure why this is, but it does appear to be affecting short loans the most.

We are currently looking into this issue and hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. If you are having difficulty locating an item, please double check the Catalogue location. If it says Main Library, and the item cannot be found in the Main Library, then please get in touch with staff at the JCM Library Service Desk in the first instance (or alternatively speak to staff at the Main Library Helpdesk and they will contact JCML on your behalf).

Many thanks and apologies for this temporary inconvenience.

Sarah Kelly
Liaison Librarian for Informatics and MedicineInformatics@EULhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05770959711375010946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21816232.post-75807795957289721562007-07-04T14:38:00.001+00:002007-07-17T10:23:06.540+00:00JCM Library - Informatics Stock MoveFurther to the message on June 28th , pleased be advised of the following moves:

Thursday 05 July 2007

All current and pre-current (un-bound) issues will be moved to the 1st floor of the Main Library.

All bound journals will be moved to the 3rd floor of the Main Library.

Friday 06 July 2006

All books (LC collection) will move to a temporary location on the 4th floor, then to their permanent location in the 4th floor LC sequence.

For further information contact Sarah Kelly, Liaison Librarian.Informatics@EULhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05770959711375010946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21816232.post-25311592937095695502007-07-02T15:32:00.000+00:002007-07-17T10:23:37.883+00:00Tours of the Library Research AnnexeDear Colleague,

You are cordially invited to an open day at the Library Research Annexe. It's not just another upgrade - and it's definitely more than just a new look. It's a completely new approach developed in close partnership with researchers at every level, from novice to professional. Using AthensDA you are able to log-in to these Athens authenticated resources using your EASE username and password (pre-2005 you had to have a separate Athens username and password).

You can get an overview of all of our Athens authenticated resources via auth.athensams.net/my/, where you will be prompted to log-in with your EASE username and password. Clicking on the 'Resources' tab on the top left will give you a full list.

THIS IS NOT A LIST OF ALL INFORMATION SERVICES SUBSCRIPTION RESOURCES

THESE ARE ONLY THE ATHENS AUTHENTICATED ONES

SOME RESOURCES ARE NOT ATHENS AUTHENTICATED

Finding non-Athens-Authenticated Resources

The School's Library allocation is used to pay for, or subscribe to, many useful online resources which are not Athens authenticated. To find out the main resources in your subject area, visit the Guide to Resources and Services in Informatics at http://www.lib.ed.ac.uk/resbysub/info.shtml. Here you will find information about various different online resources, such as book collections, journals, literature databases (for comprehensive literature searching), dictionaries/encyclopedias, resources to identify impact factors, and many other online resources. In addition there are printable handouts, links to presentations and other information, which you may find useful in order to get the most out of Library Services.

Accessing non-Athens-Authenticated Resources

For those resources which are non-Athens authenticated, most verify authorised use by IP address checking (i.e. you will be able to access these resources without a username or password while on-campus). Off-campus you can still access these resources via one of the following methods:

EZProxy

Links to all resources on the Guide to Resources and Services in Informatics should redirect you to the resource via EZProxy, which will mean you are prompted for your EASE username and password. By entering these, you should be able to access the resources as if on-campus (all resource URLs are prefixed with http://ezproxy.lib.ed.ac.uk:2048/login?url= and these links work both on and off-campus).

ProxyCache

Further information is available at http://webhelp.ucs.ed.ac.uk/docs/proxycache.html.

VPN

Further information is available at http://www.ucs.ed.ac.uk/nsd/access/vpnservice.html.

(2) and (3) require configuration of your browser and/or registration as this will allow access to other university restricted services, not just Library resources. (1) is for Library resources only, but is very straightforward as all it requires is a web-browser and your EASE username and password.

If you are having difficulties with (2) or (3), please contact your Computing Support team (http://www.ucs.ed.ac.uk/usd/).

If you are having problems with (1), or have any further queries about Library resources, please get in touch with me.

Sarah Kelly
Liaison Librarian

Informatics@EULhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05770959711375010946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21816232.post-31612469955281390932007-05-28T15:42:00.000+00:002007-05-28T15:43:27.977+00:00MLRPThe scaffolding will continue to be erected at the West side of the Library for all of this week and next week. Please bear with us and apologies for the late notice and any inconvenience this may cause.

If you are studying in the Main Library you might want to find a place on the North side (George Square Gardens), East side (Buccleuch Place) or South Side (looking on to the Meadows) to put a bit of distant between you and any potential disruption.Informatics@EULhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05770959711375010946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21816232.post-79281803967956081672007-05-15T11:13:00.000+00:002007-05-16T09:55:53.712+00:00New Interface - ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK EducationNew Interface
MIMAS are pleased to announce that we have received notification from Thomson Scientific that from mid 2007 the ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education will have a new interface. The JCR is available to University members via out WoK subscription (login with your EASE username and password, either on or off campus).

The 2005 study, released in June 2006, shows that IEEE journals maintain a healthy and growing lead in their field. The JCR ranks journals by their impact factor, defined as the average number of times articles published in a specific journal in the previous two years were cited in a particular year.

According to the JCR, IEEE publishes:

18 of the top 20 journals in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

9 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications (up from 7 in 2004)

7 of top 10 journals in Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture

8 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Information Systems

8 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Software Engineering

and high-ranking journals in several additional fields of technology

According to Thomson ISI, the JCR "presents quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic, objective way to evaluate the world's leading journals and their impact and influence in the global research community." See http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/journmag/journalcitations.html for the full article.

IEEE publications are availble via our IEL subscription (a subscription to the IEEE/IET Electronic Library includes full-text access to all IEEE journals, transactions, and magazines; IEEE conference proceedings; IET journals and conference proceedings; and all current IEEE standards) and can be access via the IEEXplore platform (login with your EASE username and password, either on or off campus).

Sarah Kelly
Liaison LibrarianInformatics@EULhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05770959711375010946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21816232.post-18798880036003951522007-05-11T10:28:00.000+00:002007-05-16T09:57:40.064+00:00IEEE - New Publications for 2007In 2006, IEEE approved six new technical journals for publication in 2007, covering such topics as biomedical circuits and systems, nanotechnology, signal processing, industrial electronics, and network and service management.
