We are pleased to announce the addition of a new reference work to MIT CogNet, the Handbook of Functional Neuroimaging of Cognition, 2nd ed.

Main Library - Borrowing and Opening Hours

As part of a range of measures to help students during the examinations and in mitigation of the construction work at the Main Library, from Monday 26 November to Friday 14 December:

the Helpdesk will be loaning bound journals to students on an overnight
loan basis
Reserve items will also be loaned overnight
- from 5pm Monday-Thursday
- from 2pm Friday and Sunday, and
- from 12noon on Saturday

Since we are closed on Sat 15 Dec, the last effective day of lending overnight bound journals and Reserve on this basis is Thurs 13 Dec (see Christmas Opening Hours).

Also, owing to essential electrical works at Appleton Tower affecting services to the Main Library, the Main Library building will close at 5pm on Friday 14th December (instead of midnight) and Helpdesk services will end at 4.50pm (instead of 6.50pm).

Main Library Photocopy Facilities

The Photocopy Room on the 1st floor of the Main Library will close from 28 July. However, in the week beginning 30 July but services will be available throughout the week on the 1st floor landing, the Current Journals area and in the Reserve Collection.

JCM Library - Informatics Stock Move

Much of the current lending stock and all of the journals have now been moved to the Main Library, and the Catalogue entries have been changed to reflect the new location. Unfortunately, there is a current problem with some of the items which have been updated to state they are in the Main Library, when in fact they are still in the JCM Library. We are not quite sure why this is, but it does appear to be affecting short loans the most.

We are currently looking into this issue and hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. If you are having difficulty locating an item, please double check the Catalogue location. If it says Main Library, and the item cannot be found in the Main Library, then please get in touch with staff at the JCM Library Service Desk in the first instance (or alternatively speak to staff at the Main Library Helpdesk and they will contact JCML on your behalf).

Tours of the Library Research Annexe

You are cordially invited to an open day at the Library Research Annexe. The open day will be on the 3rd August.

The Research Annexe opened in November 2006. The LRA houses approximately 40,000 meters of Special Collections and general collections material and is currently well used by researchers from both Edinburgh and abroad.

Tours of the LRA will be available both morning and afternoon. Please indicate in your reply which tour you would wish to partake in. Numbers will be limited so an early reply would be appreciated.

INFORMATICS COLLECTION - MOVE FROM JCM LIBRARY TO MAIN LIBRARY

Informatics Collections Move to the Main Library - July 2007

In line with the re-location of the School of Informatics to the Central Area, much of the Informatics Collection will move out of the JCM Library to the Main Library this summer.
The outline below explains which material is being moved and where it will be located after the move
There will be some material which will stay in the JCM Library (generally items currently in store)
During the move items should be unavailable for a maximum of 1 day
On completion of the move, all Catalogue entries will reflect the new item location

The JCM Library currently holds the Collections for the Schools of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, however, only material paid for with the Library’s Informatics allocation will be moved.

Books on open shelves and Reserve
Informatics purchased books currently on the open shelves will be move to the Main Library. Staff have been consulted about items currently in Reserve and whether they should remain in Reserve next Semester. Maths and Physics Reserve items will remain in the JCM Library, Informatics Reserve items will be placed in Main Library Reserve. See ‘Finding Books’ and ‘Informatics Reserve’ Guides for further information.
Current journal subscriptions
Journal titles currently being purchased from the Library’s Informatics allocation will move to the Main Library (both current un-bound and bound Volumes). (Please note, many of the current subscriptions are available electronically). See ‘Finding Journals’ Guide for further information.
LNCS
Springer is still working to make all Volumes available online. Therefore, the complete run of LNCS and LNBI (currently at the Darwin) will be integrated with the LNAI volumes available on open access shelving at the Main Library at shelmarks QA75.5 Lec. Open access may be reviewed at a later date.
Theses
All Informatics theses are currently being digitised as part of an ongoing project, therefore, the working copies will remain in the JCM Library store. Until digitisation is complete, readers can consult the working copies in the JCM Library or the archive copy in Special Collections at the Main Library. For both Libraries, readers should contact Library staff in advance as the thesis will have to be retrieved from a store.
Lesser Used Material
Items currently held in store (including non-current journal titles previously purchased from Informatics funds) are not heavily used and will remain in store, either at the JCM Library or at the Library Research Annexe.

If additional copies are not necessary, or it is during the period of time when some members of the School of Informatics are based at KB, but their Collection is at the Main Library, you may wish to apply for a FREE Intra-Library-Loan (see below).

FREE INTRA-LIBRARY LOANS

Staff and Postgraduates from all schools are entitled to free Intra-Library-Loans (transfer of material from one University Library site to another, where they are not within walking distance). In addition, Informatics undergraduates may apply for free Intra-Library-Loan at KB libraries from September to December 2007 (this applies to Main Library material only).

MLRP - Noise

There will be noisy work continuing this week:

Drilling 4 fixings into level 5 to stabilise the hoist.
The hoist, once its up and running later this week, will be used to remove various items from the 5th floor including some windows to allow access and egress from that level.
Scaffolding is still being erected along the West side of the building.
Barracading and hoardings will be put in place, again at the West side. This gives a safe area for pedestrians.
Stairs will be erected at the front of the Library in the area being used by Interserve for their sites offices etc. Again noisy work.
More drilling is scheduled for Thursday between 08.00-08.30.

As a first phase of the Main Library Redevelopment Project drilling will be taking place on the WEST side (George Square/Meadows) of the building this morning (approx 1hr) to secure the scaffolding to the building. This will be happening every morning this week around 9am to 11am. Please bear with us and apologies for the late notice and any inconvenience this may cause.

If you are studying in the Main Library you might want to find a place on the North side (George Square Gardens), East side (Buccleuch Place) or South Side (looking on to the Meadows) to put a bit of distant between you and any potential disruption.

Citations to IEEE Journals Continue to Climb

Each year, the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) from Thomson ISI examine the impact of academic journals by determining how often journals' articles are cited by later research. The JCR is available to University members via out WoK subscription (login with your EASE username and password, either on or off campus).

The 2005 study, released in June 2006, shows that IEEE journals maintain a healthy and growing lead in their field. The JCR ranks journals by their impact factor, defined as the average number of times articles published in a specific journal in the previous two years were cited in a particular year.

According to the JCR, IEEE publishes:

18 of the top 20 journals in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
9 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications (up from 7 in 2004)
7 of top 10 journals in Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture
8 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Information Systems
8 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Software Engineering
and high-ranking journals in several additional fields of technology

According to Thomson ISI, the JCR "presents quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic, objective way to evaluate the world's leading journals and their impact and influence in the global research community." In 2006, IEEE approved six new technical journals for publication in 2007, covering such topics as biomedical circuits and systems, nanotechnology, signal processing, industrial electronics, and network and service management. MyEd UPGRADE/SERVICE DISRUPTION

Service Disruption
MyEd will be unavailable from 9am to 5pm on the 26th of April whilst we perform the upgrade. However, for the time that MyEd is unavailable you will still be able to access a variety of key systems directly from a page of links.

Accessing Key Services
To access key services during the upgrade go to MyEd (https://www.myed.ed.ac.uk/) as usual, and select the system you need access to. Some MyEd content such as Bookmarks will be unavailable. We advise that you check MyEd in the days before the upgrade and ensure that you have all you need well in advance.

What exactly does this mean for you ?

Your existing layout (tabs and channels) will be replaced with the new default layout. However, we will provide you with a tool to view and print a Œblueprint‚ of your old layout as part of the upgrade process so that you can easily re-do your layout if you want to.
Personal information such as your Bookmarks will be unaffected.
You will receive a new News Reader which will combine your news feeds into a single channel and also allow you to add all of your own favourite feeds.
We will also be able to automatically add new channels to your tabs in the future, providing you with fresh new content as it becomes available.
You will still always be able to customise MyEd, but we hope to provide more of what you want 'out of the box'.

As our world becomes smaller, scientific communities are becoming increasingly international. National scientific societies are evolving to serve their international constituencies, and in doing so, have come to reconsider their roles, their purposes, their images, their identities, their 'branding' and, consequently, their names. This is such an occasion for AAAI as it embarks on its second quarter century.

AAAI's membership has strong international representation. The same is true of the contributors to, and attendees of, AAAI, and AAAI-sponsored, conferences, symposia, tutorials and workshops. A large fraction of our membership and an even larger fraction of conference paper submissions are from authors based outside the U.S. Beyond the annual conferences held in North America, much of AAAI's mission, activities, and membership are not well-characterized by the label "American." In short, our original name does not reflect our dual roles, national and international, in the global AI community.

Following this line of reasoning, the AAAI Executive Committee recommended changing the name of our organization from the "American Association for Artificial Intelligence" to the "Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence." This proposal drops the adjective "American" from the organization's name but retains the AAAI abbreviation, logo, and 'brand.' More importantly, the mission of the organization does not change. The new name simply reflects current reality and removes potential limitations imposed by the old name as we move forward in an increasingly global scientific environment. We have consulted with many of our sibling AI societies. We have no plans to change the scope or location of our activities as a consequence of the name change.

The proposal initially received enthusiastic support from the AAAI Executive Council (unanimous with one abstention), and the Strategic Planning Committee, consisting of all past presidents and current presidential officers of AAAI. We then put it to a vote of the membership, which approved the proposal. The Executive Council has subsequently unanimously endorsed the name change.

The membership at large shares our enthusiasm for this exciting new face for AAAI. We have complied with the regulations governing organizations such as AAAI in carrying out this name change. I would like, in particular, to thank our Executive Director, Carol Hamilton, and all our staff, for taking on the additional burden of executing the name change proposal in addition to all their regular duties. So I am delighted to report that, effective March 1, 2007, AAAI is now the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

Blackwell Synergy online journals platform has now been relaunched with a new design. Please take a look at www.blackwell-synergy.com

This redesign provides easier navigation, faster loading times, and improved access to tools for researchers. The main visible changes, are the movement of the major functions to the left-hand menu, the grouping together of tools at each level of the website, tabs being replaced by left-menu listings and a cleaner and more modern look and feel. In addition, the new website meets the latest accessibility standards (ADA section 508 and W3C’s WAI-AA).

LNCS - Browse Complete List of Volumes

As you will be aware as of October 2004, all new volumes in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science Series (LNCS), and the sub-series Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics (LNBI), beame available online only via SpringerLink.

As we stopped taking print volumes, individual Library Catalogue records were no longer added for each Volume and instead members of the University were encouraged to search for content using the search functionality in SpringerLink. This allows you to search by keywords e.g. in the title, summary, author, editor, ISSN, ISBN and also allows you to limit your search by date.

However, for those who wish to browse by Volume Title and/or Number, you may have found that this is not that easy within SpringerLink. If this is the case, you may be interested in the following links which provide a complete list of all volumes in the LNCS (LNAI and LNBI) series - PDF [878 KB], Excel [1,109 KB]. *

Also, as has been noted previosly, most Volumes are now available online, but there are still some which are not. Missing Volumes do not follow a set sequence, so it may be difficult to know which volumes are not yet online. For those Volumes not yet available onlione, print copies of LNCS and LNBI are available at the Darwin Library, and LNAI is available at the Main Library.

EndNote Web via ISI Web of Knowledge – Now available

Please be informed that as an institution subscribed to the ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education, we now have free access to EndNote Web.

Once logged into the ISI Web of knowledge Service for UK Education it is listed at the bottom right in the green registration box on the Web of Knowledge Welcome/Home screen.

In order to create and access your own EndNote Web Library, you must sign in/register (in addition to your EASE log-in).

Benefits of creating an EndNote Web Library:

You can add references to your EndNote Web Library directly from Web of Science and other ISI Web of Knowledge products
You can import references from other listed databases
You can organise references in folders for access and use at any time-collections are retained between sessions
You can create formatted reference lists in a variety of publishing styles
You will be able to access your EndNote Web Library from any computer at the institution (or off-campus with your EASE log-in)

What people said about the Transkills course

A number of 'Information Resources - Searching Research Literature' courses are run by the University's Transferable Skills Programme for postgraduate research students. These courses will help new research students make the best use of library and information resources both within the University and beyond.

For the sessions 2006/7 a presentation was given to those attending the Informatics course. To find further details of all of the information introduced in the presentation (PDF, 155KB) the group were directed to the Guide to Resources in Informatics, specifically: Resources (to use the resources specifically designed to locate the type of information required), additional background information on conducting a literature search, and the various PDF Guides available (specifically 'Planning a Search Strategy' and 'Undertaking a Literature Review'). Printed Guides from providers, relating to the resources, are also available online from the Resources pages (in the support sections).

Participants were asked to complete a short evaluation form. This is very important to us as it helps ensure that the course is beneficial to those attending.

Services
Here your Liaison Librarian has prepared various web-pages providing more detailed information relating spcific information requirements. You will also find links to PowerPoint slides.

Keeping up-to-date
In this section you will find links to information and resources that will help keep you up-to-date with new papers published, new books published, new books added to library stock and library news and events for informatics.

PDF Guides
The PDF Guides have been written by the Liaison Lbrarian for Informatics, and colleagues. The aim of these Guides it allow members of the School to read online or print out information on topics that are of interest. There are both detailed Guides and introductory 1 page guides.

NEWS: BOOK ORDERING

We are now ready to start processing book orders again. All previous orders placed after May 23rd, via the online order form, have been carried forward for ordering in this financial year.

As a reminder:

PRINT BOOKS

The procedure for recommending print books is listed here.

Please check the Library Catalogue before submitting your request. You may be interested in the EUL Catalogue 'bookmarklet', which will allow you to easily check the catalogue from sites such as Amazon.

If we already have the item in stock, but you feel the Library should have more copies, please indicate this is the 'comments' section. As a general rule, for print orders, we recommend 1 copy per 20 students and you can choose to place the item on 1 week, standard loan or reserve (3 hour loan). In addition, we also offer e-reserve.

NOTIFICATION

Due to staff changes at the Library, all book orders are now being placed at the Main Library. Due to the large volume of orders processed, it will no longer be possible to notify individual requesters when the item arrives in the Library. Unless you hear from me otherwise, please assume that the order has been placed. Once placed, the progress of the order can be checked via the Library Catalogue.

E-BOOKS

We subscribe to several online book collections, and there may be items in the collection you wish to include in your reading lists. In addition, recommendations for new titles can be placed for both Safari and NetLibrary. If you wish to order an online/ebook, a different procedure should be followed, and this is listed here.

Orders do not need to be placed for any volumes in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (or the LNAI sub-series). Our online collection is updated as soon as Springer make the volume available, and can be accessed here .

Temporary suspension of Laptop Loans service

Due to essential maintenance of laptops and upgrading of software, the Laptop Loans service will be temporarily suspended between Saturday 19th August and Monday 4th September. Normal service (3 day loans) will resume on Tuesday 5th September.

NEWS: MLRP - access to Library Stores

Main Library Stores - temporary offsite storage arrangements

During the summer and autumn of 2006 material presently located in the Main Library lower ground stores, which is normally collected for users on request, will be stored offsite and will be unavailable during this period. This includes all the journals recorded on the catalogue, and former AI Library material with the Catalogue location Main Library Store 1 and Main Library Store 2.

Users are encouraged to use electronic equivalents, if accessible, or nearby alternative locations. Inter-library loans will be be available, at no charge, to registered borrowers of Edinburgh University Library ONLY, for any other material not falling into these categories.

NEWS: Inspec hits 8 million records

Just three years on from announcing its seven millionth record, Inspec has just seen the addition of its eighth.

Inspec is the world's leading bibliographic database providing comprehensive global coverage to the scientific and technical literature in the fields of physics, electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, manufacturing and production engineering.

The database is growing at a rate of 400,000 records per year. This year Inspec has extended its coverage in the fields of manufacturing and production technology. It has also included one million full-text links (DOIs) in a new XML backfile that has been provided to all Inspec Vendors for reloading.
