Access to Non-Athens Authenticated resources Off-Campus

Athens is an authentication service which facilitates access to some BUT NOT ALL Information Services subscription resources. Using AthensDA you are able to log-in to these Athens authenticated resources using your EASE username and password (pre-2005 you had to have a separate Athens username and password).

You can get an overview of all of our Athens authenticated resources via auth.athensams.net/my/, where you will be prompted to log-in with your EASE username and password. Clicking on the 'Resources' tab on the top left will give you a full list.

  • THIS IS NOT A LIST OF ALL INFORMATION SERVICES SUBSCRIPTION RESOURCES
  • THESE ARE ONLY THE ATHENS AUTHENTICATED ONES
  • SOME RESOURCES ARE NOT ATHENS AUTHENTICATED

Finding non-Athens-Authenticated Resources

The School's Library allocation is used to pay for, or subscribe to, many useful online resources which are not Athens authenticated. To find out the main resources in your subject area, visit the Guide to Resources and Services in Informatics at http://www.lib.ed.ac.uk/resbysub/info.shtml. Here you will find information about various different online resources, such as book collections, journals, literature databases (for comprehensive literature searching), dictionaries/encyclopedias, resources to identify impact factors, and many other online resources. In addition there are printable handouts, links to presentations and other information, which you may find useful in order to get the most out of Library Services.

Accessing non-Athens-Authenticated Resources

For those resources which are non-Athens authenticated, most verify authorised use by IP address checking (i.e. you will be able to access these resources without a username or password while on-campus). Off-campus you can still access these resources via one of the following methods:
  1. EZProxy

Links to all resources on the Guide to Resources and Services in Informatics should redirect you to the resource via EZProxy, which will mean you are prompted for your EASE username and password. By entering these, you should be able to access the resources as if on-campus (all resource URLs are prefixed with http://ezproxy.lib.ed.ac.uk:2048/login?url= and these links work both on and off-campus).

  2. ProxyCache

Further information is available at http://webhelp.ucs.ed.ac.uk/docs/proxycache.html.

  3. VPN

Further information is available at http://www.ucs.ed.ac.uk/nsd/access/vpnservice.html.
(2) and (3) require configuration of your browser and/or registration as this will allow access to other university restricted services, not just Library resources. (1) is for Library resources only, but is very straightforward as all it requires is a web-browser and your EASE username and password.

If you are having difficulties with (2) or (3), please contact your Computing Support team (http://www.ucs.ed.ac.uk/usd/).

If you are having problems with (1), or have any further queries about Library resources, please get in touch with me.
