Main Library - Borrowing and Opening Hours

As part of a range of measures to help students during the examinations and in mitigation of the construction work at the Main Library, from Monday 26 November to Friday 14 December:

• the Helpdesk will be loaning bound journals to students on an overnight
  loan basis
  
• Reserve items will also be loaned overnight
  
  • from 5pm Monday-Thursday
    
  • from 2pm Friday and Sunday, and
    
  • from 12noon on Saturday
    

Since we are closed on Sat 15 Dec, the last effective day of lending overnight bound journals and Reserve on this basis is Thurs 13 Dec (see Christmas Opening Hours).

Also, owing to essential electrical works at Appleton Tower affecting services to the Main Library, the Main Library building will close at 5pm on Friday 14th December (instead of midnight) and Helpdesk services will end at 4.50pm (instead of 6.50pm).

JCM Library - Informatics Stock Move

Much of the current lending stock and all of the journals have now been moved to the Main Library, and the Catalogue entries have been changed to reflect the new location. Unfortunately, there is a current problem with some of the items which have been updated to state they are in the Main Library, when in fact they are still in the JCM Library. We are not quite sure why this is, but it does appear to be affecting short loans the most.

We are currently looking into this issue and hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. If you are having difficulty locating an item, please double check the Catalogue location. If it says Main Library, and the item cannot be found in the Main Library, then please get in touch with staff at the JCM Library Service Desk in the first instance (or alternatively speak to staff at the Main Library Helpdesk and they will contact JCML on your behalf).

JCM Library - Informatics Stock Move

Further to the message on June 28th , pleased be advised of the following moves:

Thursday 05 July 2007

• All current and pre-current (un-bound) issues will be moved to the 1st floor of the Main Library.
• All bound journals will be moved to the 3rd floor of the Main Library.

Friday 06 July 2006

• All books (LC collection) will move to a temporary location on the 4th floor, then to their permanent location in the 4th floor LC sequence.

ERA Service Disruption

ERA will be unavailable from 5pm Wednesday 25th April to c. 5pm Thursday 26th April. During this time we are upgrading both the hardware and software to provide a better repository service.

Any items deposited in ERA during this time will not be archived. Please use the mediated deposit service instead - send your items to era.deposit@ed.ac.uk and we will archive them online as soon as the upgrade has happened.

MyEd UPGRADE/SERVICE DISRUPTION

Service Disruption
MyEd will be unavailable from 9am to 5pm on the 26th of April whilst we perform the upgrade. However, for the time that MyEd is unavailable you will still be able to access a variety of key systems directly from a page of links.

Accessing Key Services
To access key services during the upgrade go to MyEd (https://www.myed.ed.ac.uk/) as usual, and select the system you need access to. Some MyEd content such as Bookmarks will be unavailable. We advise that you check MyEd in the days before the upgrade and ensure that you have all you need well in advance.

What exactly does this mean for you ?

• Your existing layout (tabs and channels) will be replaced with the new default layout. However, we will provide you with a tool to view and print a Œblueprint‚ of your old layout as part of the upgrade process so that you can easily re-do your layout if you want to.
• Personal information such as your Bookmarks will be unaffected.
• You will receive a new News Reader which will combine your news feeds into a single channel and also allow you to add all of your own favourite feeds.
• We will also be able to automatically add new channels to your tabs in the future, providing you with fresh new content as it becomes available.
• You will still always be able to customise MyEd, but we hope to provide more of what you want 'out of the box'.

ERA - possible service disruption

EASE Service Alert

Please note that the EASE login service will be at risk on the above date/time whilst a software upgrade is applied. It is hoped that there will be little or no disruption to EASE logins at this time but the hour should be considered at risk.

ScienceDirect access disruption

The publisher, Elsevier, has notified us that ScienceDirect will be unavailable on Sunday 11th March for approximately 7 hours from 6am to around 1pm.

Blackwell Synergy Access Problems

The Blackwell Synergy ejournal service is currently unavailable. We're awaiting further information from the publisher.

British Standards Online

There has been a problem accessing the full-text of British Standards online (http://www.bsonline.bsi-global.com). This problem has now been resolved.

To confirm we have full-text access to British Standards (and BSI adopted European and International Standards) and this is indicated by the symbol in the search results. Note, prices are still displayed, but clicking on the PDF icon will take you to the full-text without need for payment.

ProQuest Service Disruption

ProQuest CSA will be taking a maintenance window to install infrastructure upgrades ensuring continued reliable performance. The 12-hour maintenance window will begin on Saturday 17^th February 2007 at 22:00 EST (03:00 UTC/GMT) and run until Sunday 18^th February 2007 10:00 EST (15:00 UTC/GMT). NetLibrary Access problems

There is currently a problem with access to NetLibrary ebook titles. Links from the Library catalogue are not recognised (and this has been reported to the supplier).

In the meantime, it is still possible to access our titles on NetLibrary by logging on to Searcher, selecting NetLibrary from the list of resources, and carrying out a search for the required title.

We are going to add two new cosign servers into the live service. Once the system is in sync, we will then remove the old cosign servers. This process should not interrupt the EASE cosign service, but the service should be regarded as AT RISK throughout this period.

ScienceDirect Unavailable - 20th January 2007

OUP access problems

We are currently experiencing problems with access to the Oxford University Press Journals on Swetswise. However, if you use the ejournals list/catalogue, you should be presented with alternative links (probably to Highwire), where you should be able to access these journals.

SERVICE ALERT - E-JOURNALS

Ejournal access is now EASE authenticated
You will be prompted to login once at the start of each search session.

A number of ejournal sites are currently inaccesible via both the ejournals list and the catalogue.
This is being worked on urgently and we apologise for this disruption to service.

There is a known problem with access to Blackwell Synergy ejournals
Direct access to the University's subscribed titles is working via the publisher's site - please go to http://www.blackwell-synergy.com and select the title you need from the drop down menu.

NEWS: Laptop Loan

Temporary suspension of Laptop Loans service

Due to essential maintenance of laptops and upgrading of software, the Laptop Loans service will be temporarily suspended between Saturday 19th August and Monday 4th September. Normal service (3 day loans) will resume on Tuesday 5th September.
